Legendary California viticulturalist, David Abreu, produces exceptional single-vineyard wines in tiny quantities. The 1995 Madrona Ranch is almost entirely Cabernet Sauvignon with lesser parts Cabernet Franc and Merlot. The nose cascades with superbly defined aromas of dried cherry, cassis, woodsmoke and graphite. A beautifully harmonious wine of endless complexity.

The 1995 Madrona Ranch, tasted from magnum, is one of the highlights at a charity dinner at Medlar restaurant. Still remarkably youthful, it offers a cornucopia of red cherry and crushed strawberry fruit on the nose, while Indian ink, pressed violet and iris flower join the chorus line with aeration. The palate is intense yet balanced, with very pure and seductive red fruit and a slightly confit-like finish. Difficult to resist, I would actually afford this another few years if broached in this format. Neal Martin17th June 2025

Terroir Driven Cabernet Sauvignon

David Abreu established his eponymous winery in the 1980s, purchasing the Madrona Ranch and converting it into a mix of farmland and vineyards. The Thorevilos and Capella vineyards were added a few years later and Las Posadas, a Howell Mountain vineyard, was added to the estate's holdings in the year 2000. The result is something quite unique in Napa - a collection of distinct sites all producing world class, terroir-driven Cabernet Sauvignon.

Winemaker for the last 20 years is former chef turned viticulturist Brad Grimes. Brad keeps the focus of the estate firmly set on the founder's original goal - to emulate the finest wines of Pauillac and Margaux. Based on the long waiting list and never-ended near-perfect critic scores, he's hit a home run in that department.
