La Rioja Alta
Tuesday, 5th December 2017, 6.30 - 8.30pm
Hosted by Angus Mcnab
As a region, Rioja benefitted from an influx of talented winemakers & winemaking families following the devastating effect of phylloxera on French vineyards in the mid-late 19th century. Bringing their expertise & know-how with them, these families went on to heavily influence the production & style of wine made in Rioja - something that can still be felt today.
La Rioja Alta is one of the oldest wineries in Rioja, having been established in 1890 by a group of five Riojan & Basque families with a passion for wine. Currently, the winery combines an intense respect for tradition with a forward thinking attitude & produces ripe, concentrated Rioja which is consistently ranked amongst the finest in the region.
Guests at this tasting will have the opportunity to taste six different wines from La Rioja Alta including Lagar de Cervera Albariño 2016 from the winery's property in the Rías Baixas, La Rioja Alta 904 1997 & 2007, La Rioja Alta 890 2004, Viña Ardanza 2008 & Viña Arana 2009.
For those unfamiliar with the superb wines of La Rioja Alta, this is a tasting not to be missed.
Tickets for this event are £25, redeemable against any purchase of La Rioja Alta wines on the evening of the tasting.
Wednesday, 24th January 2018, 6.30 - 8.30pm
Hosted by Michel Friou
Founded in the mid-1990s as a joint project between Baron Philippe de Rothschild & Concha Y Toro, Almaviva is very much a continuation of other famous transatlantic collaborations such as Opus One, Dominus & Seña. Drawing on the French Château system, the winery focusses its attention on a single wine or "Grand Vin" & strives to showcase the unique & wonderful terroir of Puente Alto.
Initial vintages of Almaviva were made using a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carménère & Cabernet Franc, while more recent vintages have included small quantities of Merlot & Petit Verdot. After vinification, the wine spends between 16-18 months in new French oak barrels before bottling. The result is a dense, concentrated, fruit-forward style with superb ageing potential.
We are pleased to have Almaviva's head winemaker Michel Friou attend the store to host this fantastic evening. Michel will guide guests through a six vintage vertical of Almaviva including 2001, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2013 & 2015.
Tickets for this event are £75, with £50 redeemable against any purchase of Almaviva on the evening of the tasting.
