Château d`Yquem 1989 is a mature sweet wine from the Sauternes appellation. The 1989 vintage was marked by high temperatures and favourable conditions for botrytis cinerea, leading to exceptional ripeness in the Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc grapes. This half-bottle is marked by concentrated flavours and a deep amber hue, revealing notes of dried fruits, honey and saffron spice.

To finish, back on “home turf” with the 1989 Yquem. It is a vintage I have drunk many times in recent years: quince, apricots, honey and saffron burst forth on the nose with brilliant delineation. The palate is a little tauter than in previous bottles, with marmalade and quince to the fore and an energetic, poised, intense finish that lingers in the mouth. It`s not the best bottle I’ve had, but it`s not far off!

13.2%, 127 g/l RS, TA 4.0. Not a classic vintage – very dry and warm but with a terrible hailstorm in early Jul. Used only 15% of crop for this wine. Strong wine with incredible ageing potential. 25 Sep – 25 Oct. 20 days of picking.Deep rich tawny – waxy nose. Very very big and rewarding with good life. A kick in the heels. Very long and splendid – really enormous in every way – much bigger and rounder and deeper than the 1990. Very long. A monument. (JR)
