Château d`Yquem 1987 is a sweet wine from the renowned Sauternes region of Bordeaux, known for being the only estate classified as Premier Cru Supérieur in the 1855 rankings. This vintage showcases the estate`s unique 113-hectare vineyard, primarily planted with 75-80% Sémillon and 20-25% Sauvignon Blanc, benefitting from ideal climactic conditions for noble rot. The 1987 vintage faced challenges that necessitated stringent sorting, yielding a medium-bodied wine. Notable components include honeyed apricot, tangerine, and a distinct nutty quality, underscoring the intricacies typical of Yquem’s vinification process.

Vinous
The 1987 Yquem, the second time I have encountered this off-vintage, still misses a bit of vigor on the nose that features quince and white peach scents. It has modest attraction and yet does not possess the complexity of other vintages. The palate is balanced, but a bitter lemon element toward the finish feels jarring and doesn't quite meld with the overall blend. I'm not a huge fan of the 1987 Yquem, though it was a very tough vintage. Tasted at the Yquem vertical at the château.Neal Martin25th March 2025
