Château d`Yquem 1983 is a mature-vintage noble sweet wine produced in the Sauternes appellation of Bordeaux. Located in the heart of the Sauternes appellation on Bordeaux`s Left Bank, Yquem is the most prestigious producer of sweet wines in the world, and the only Sauternes producer to be granted the status of `Premier Cru Supérieur`. The estate vineyard is planted mostly Sémillon, with a smaller proportion of Sauvignon Blanc, as reflected in the wine`s blend. Harvest can involve up to 200 workers, who may pass through the vineyard up to 10 times to pick only those berries that have been infected with `noble rot`, the fungus which shrivels and dehydrates the grape berries, concentrating their sugars. 1983 is among the greatest vintages of Yquem.

The 1983 Yquem has a complex bouquet with dried honey, quince and Seville orange marmalade aromas. There is a subtle floral element at play, with saffron and yellow flower scents emerging with aeration. The palate is very well balanced, with a tang of marmalade on the entry and a killer line of acidity. It's vibrant and poised with an overly spicy finish that lingers in the mouth. Arguably the best Yquem of the decade until the 1989, the 1983 shows that there is still plenty of gas in the tank. Tasted at the Yquem vertical at the château.Neal Martin25th March 2025
