Château d’Yquem 1978 is a rare sweet white wine from the Sauternes appellation in Bordeaux, France. This blend comprises predominantly Sémillon, with a smaller portion of Sauvignon Blanc, reaching an alcohol level of 13.5%. The vintage benefited from a warm, dry autumn, which facilitated optimal botrytis cinerea development, contributing to the wine`s complexity. Aged for over three years in 100% new French oak barrels, this vintage exhibits a deep golden hue, with aromas of dried apricots, honeyed oranges, and beeswax, complemented by a vibrant acidity that offsets the high residual sugar. This release highlights the estate`s finesse and mastery in crafting balanced wines, reflective of the 1978 growing conditions.

The 1978 Yquem comprises just 20% of the harvest. It's a bit dusty on the nose and lacks fruit intensity. The palate is sharp and almost bitter, short and compact on the finish. Apparently, two bottles were opened at the château and both were the same. Caveat emptor! Tasted at the château. Neal Martin28th May 2025
