Widely considered to be the greatest sweet wine producer in the world, Château d’Yquem is unparalleled in its consistency, quality and near limitless capacity to age. This is a sweet wine like no other, with extraordinary levels of concentration and aromatic complexity, combined with remarkably silky texture, impeccable freshness and an incredibly long finish. The 1937 was produced following a drought in Sauternes and has sometimes been compared as close in quality to the stratospheric 1945.

The 1937 Yquem is a vintage that I have encountered on three occasions, once at the estate. Picking commenced with a first trie between 21 and 30 September, though the berries were low in sugar. What sealed the quality of this Sauternes vintage was a spell of dry and warm weather between 1 and 23 October so that at Yquem, grapes rapidly achieved 23° to 25° potential alcohol. The nose is hesitant and needs coaxing before it reveals melted candle wax, Clementine, light adhesive scents and a little hazelnut. The palate is concentrated and powerful, though it does not have the crystalline, the pixelated virtue of say, the 1945 or the 1989. Maybe one day I will have my 1937 epiphany? Tasted at the château.
