2012 was the first vintage of Yalumba’s flagship wine, The Caley. It is a blend of Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon and old vine Shiraz from the Barossa. It is bold and expressive with notes of warm blackberries, cassis, five spice, cedar and anise. It is firmly structured and powerful with grainy tannins, fresh acidity and deep, but fleshy, fruit. Drink 2020-2045.

Opaque, bright-hued ruby. Deeply pitched, smoke-accented blackberry, boysenberry cherry liqueur, potpourri and cured tobacco aromas are lifted by a sexy floral note and a touch of cracked pepper. Rich but energetic, almost weightless as well, showing excellent focus and spicy thrust to its dark berry and floral pastille flavors. Smoothly balances richness and finesse and shows no rough edges. Finishes on a smoky mineral note, with outstanding tenacity, lingering floral character and velvety, well-knit tannins that lend subtle grip.Josh Raynolds1st December 2021

52% Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Barossa Valley Shiraz. Aged for 22 months in French barriques (35-40% new), then blended, bottled and cellared for 36 months prior to release.
Very dark crimson. Lifted and minty on the nose, the wine greets you on the nose in aromatic, super-ripe Cabernet idiom but there is much more breadth on the palate than a 100% young Cabernet would offer. This has quintessentially Australian Barossa Shiraz ballast pushing it out to the outer limits of the palate where there is no shortage of acidity to keep the ripeness well behaved, and as this wine with its notes of dried herbs opens out in the glass it hints at some rather exotic, highly polished leather even at this early stage. Made with a gloriously light touch, this reminds me more of Hill of Grace than Grange, at which mighty heights it is indubitably aimed. (JR)
