Wiston Estate Blanc de Noirs 2018 is a vintage English sparkling wine produced from a blend of Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. The 2018 season provided optimum ripeness, translated into a rich profile of redcurrant, pomegranate and subtle earthy spices. This wine is characterised by its broad-shouldered frame and a velvety mouthfeel that is balanced by a refreshing citrus acidity. A gastronomic wine with a long, savoury finish that highlights the depth and character of the estate’s chalk-grown fruit.

The 2018 Blanc de Noirs is a pure Pinot Noir from the pure chalk soils of Wiston Estate. It is fermented and matured in used oak barrels. The wine then spent five years on lees and is still shy on the nose. Notions of freshly baked apple tart appear only tentatively before broadening into a touch of savory maple syrup, salty chalk and blanched hazelnut. Electric acidity is immediately apparent on the palate, where fine mousse swirls up lovely apple notions and vivid brightness. An undertow of creaminess works with the fine mousse to soften the undeniable freshness, but this says England with an unmistakable, clear and soaring voice. Dosage is 7 grams per liter. Full bottle 1,653 g. 100% Pinot Noir from estate vineyards on the South Downs of Sussex. Fermented in used oak barrels. Five years sur lattes. Dosage 7 g/l.
Weighty and glorious. A wine that presides on its gibbous luminosity and curves, drawing in rich, slow, sensuous tides of flavour. Praline, roast chestnut, panna cotta, candied angelica, candied citrus peel. A roll-call of flavours that make me think of panettone (and, on that note, a slice of which would not go amiss alongside of a glass of this). Failing Italian Christmas cakes, I`d reach for a creamy sweet Kashmir curry or a South African bobotie. (TC)
