Weingut Knoll Ried Loibenberg Smaragd Grüner Veltliner 2022 is a full-bodied, single-vineyard white wine from the Wachau region of Austria. Since Weingut Knoll launched in the 1950s, it has been instrumental in shaping Wachau`s reputation as a serious, high-quality wine-growing region. Knoll has 18 hectares of vineyards along the slopes of the Danube river in Wachau. Loibenberg is the warmest vineyard Knoll works with; it is south-facing and the terraces reflect the heat. This makes for a charming and generous expression of Grüner Veltliner and Riesling. From this 2022 Smaragd Grüner, expect lush, full-bodied notes of apple blossom, rose petal and linseed, with fleshy orchard and stone fruits, and a creamy, broad palate with hints of oriental spice.

The 2022 Ried Loibenberg Loibner Grüner Veltliner Smaragd is a dense, intensely aromatic cru with an elegant texture and a long-lasting, complex finish with tropical fruit aromas, fine salinity and a few bitter notes. Tasted at Schloss Dürnstein, Wachau, in September 2023. - Stephan Reinhardt

Unterloiben. Sandy, stony soil over granitic gneiss. 414 m from the Danube, terraced and steep at up to 394 m.

Not as open as the Alzinger version, but more marked freshness and persistence. Leaner but longer. Still on the light side for Smaragd though it builds to greater power as it warms in the glass. (JH)
