Domaine Sylvain Cathiard’s 2005 Vosne-Romanée is a village-level red wine from an exceptional noughties vintage. Sébastien Cathiard’s father, Sylvain, produced wines with immense power and structural density during this period. This bottle shows a deep core of black plum, cocoa and Asian spice, framed by tannins that remain firm and youthful. Despite the ripeness of the year, there is a refreshing vein of acidity that ensures the wine feels balanced and athletic. It is a brooding, muscular expression that has only recently begun to shed its primary fruit for more complex notes of leather and forest floor. The finish is broad and sustained, marking it as an over-achieving village wine.

Good deep red. Aromas of dark raspberry, blood orange and spicy oak. Dense, supple and sappy, with terrific stuffing and structure for a village wine. Finishes impressively long and sweet, with dusty, ripe tannins. An uncommonly good village wine.Stephen Tanzer1st March 2008

From La Colombiere, just east of the village, the Cathiard 2005 Vosne-Romanee displays bright cherry and cranberry on the nose, an alternation of brisk freshness with hints of caramel and a subtle floral note on a creamy, texturally refined palate, and a lovely finish in which the fruits and flowers are joined by white pepper and cardamom. Also recommended. 2005 Bourgogne . - David Schildknecht

Domaine Sylvain Cathiard

This small, family run domaine was first established in the commune of Vosne-Romanée in Burgundy by Sylvain Cathiard’s grandfather. Since 2011, following the retirement of Sylvain, the domaine has been run by Sylvain's son, Sébastien Cathiard. Famed for the superb quality Pinot Noir it produces, the domaine has vineyard holdings across Vosne-Romanée, Nuits-St-Georges and Chambolle-Musigny, in addition to tiny holdings in Clos Vougeot and Romanée-St-Vivant.

In the words of esteemed critic, Neal Martin, "“Do I need to tell you how much I adore Sylvain Cathiard’s wines? This is a seriously good quality producer of Vosne-Romanée, one whose star is in the ascendant. These are gloriously silky smooth, complex wines; not just with the top Premier Crus but down to the generic Burgundy. It’s the intensity and focus that set Cathiard apart, wines with supreme definition and purity that seduce the palate like a beautiful courtesan. I would love to taste his Grand Crus, but they are incredibly rare and sought-after. This producer comes highly recommended from top to bottom.”
