Domaine René Engel was a historic estate that came to an abrupt end after the untimely death of Philippe Engel in 2005. The domaine was eventually sold to French businessman François Pinault and renamed Domaine Eugenie. This is a rare bottle of Vosne-Romanée 2002, one of the last vintages produced by Philippe. This was an excellent vintage for Burgundy, an in particular for red wines, displaying excellent concentration and balance.

The 2002 Vosne-Romanee, a medium to dark ruby-colored wine, was bottled seven days before I visited the winery. Its up-front, gorgeously sweet aromatics reveal raspberries and cherries. On the palate, this softly textured, medium-bodied wine bursts with satiny red fruits as well as hints of cola. It is extroverted yet possesses excellent structure. Drink it over the next 6-7 years.
