Domaine Jean Grivot’s 2011 Les Beaux Monts is a Premier Cru Burgundy red wine from the Vosne-Romanée appellation. This wine comes from a high-altitude site on the border of Flagey-Échezeaux, where the limestone-heavy soil produces a style defined by tension and mineral drive. In the challenging 2011 season, Grivot achieved a result that is airy and floral, favouring red berry fruit and Asian spice notes. The palate is medium-bodied with a firm acidic backbone and a salty, energetic finish that reflects the cool nature of the vineyard.

The 2011 Vosne-Romanée Les Beaux Monts 1er Cru has a generous and detailed bouquet with ample dark cherry, raspberry and subtle balsamic notes, later some lovely scents of morels and tobacco. It feels mercurial but utterly absorbing. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, harmonious and demonstrating much more vigor than its peers. This Premier Cru is bounding with energy and focus with a detailed, mineral-driven finish that is a pure joy. Superb. Tasted at Flint Wines Burgundy 2011 tasting.Neal Martin1st May 2019

Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaumonts 2011 has an intense bouquet of strawberry pastilles, raspberry and orange blossom that is not the most complex, but offers plenty of fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent, ripe raspberry and strawberry fruit, smooth in the mouth, and quite plump on the finish that only wishes to please. Not a long-term proposition perhaps, but this Vosne-Romanee will have commercial appeal. Note that it does seem to harden in the glass and reveal a green note, hence my cautious score. - Neal Martin
