Domaine Jean Grivot Vosne-Romanée Les Beaux Monts 1999 is a mature 1er Cru Burgundy Pinot Noir from the Côte de Nuits. The climat of Les Beaux Monts lies above Echézeaux Grand Cru, with a small section crossing the boundary into Echézeaux itself. Several of its parcels straddle the border between Vosne-Romanée and Flagey-Echézeaux to the west. Jean Grivot is one of the great names of Vosne-Romanée winemaking. Winemaking is now increasingly overseen by Mathilde, daughter of Étienne and Marielle. Meticulous work in the vineyard is aimed at producing fruit of impeccable quality. In the cellar, the fruit is completely destemmed following a pre-ferment cold maceration for around one week. The wines are matured in oak barrels for 15-20 months (up to 40% new for the domaine`s best wines). "This is a very powerful wine if not necessarily an elegant one with plenty of Vosne spice and rugged, structured, dense and punchy flavours that display solid length. The tannins are ripe and this will clearly take its time coming together but it`s a powerful and serious blessed with excellent underlying material." Burghound, 2004

Bright ruby-red. Primary aromas of dark berries, minerals, bitter chocolate, mint and flowers. Dense, sweet and concentrated; atypically powerful for this cuvee but not at all overly extracted or hard. This has lovely sweetness and texture. Finishes with substantial, building tannins and impressive persistence. Almost too spectacular in its youth for my style, notes Grivot.Stephen Tanzer1st March 2002
