Vosne-Romanée Les Barreaux 2012 from Domaine Anne Gros is a Burgundy red wine produced from old Pinot Noir vines in the Vosne-Romanée commune. The 2012 vintage provided a wine of great structural precision and aromatic clarity, featuring a profile of black cherries, rose petals and iron-rich earth. The magnum format has allowed for a more measured maturation than standard bottles, resulting in a wine with vibrant acidity and a firm, structural core. Its texture is silky, with the tannins now fully resolved into a cohesive and expansive palate. It possesses a long, savoury finish and the signature mineral tension that defines this high-altitude terroir.

From vines planted way back in 1903, the 2012 Vosne-Romanee Les Barreaux has a very elegant and pure bouquet, the fruit profile a tad darker and more introspective than the Chambolle, but very delineated. The palate is crisp and vibrant on the entry with blood orange infusing the dark cherry and blackcurrant fruit, with fine precision on the almost understated but classy finish.

(Gros made just three barrels of this wine in 2012--she has the right to bottle nine--from vines planted in 1903): Bright, full red. Urgent aromas of crushed wild raspberry and cranberry, further lifted by a mineral element. Sappy, saline and taut, with a powerful stony quality giving this very tight wine a penetrating quality. This is alway highest in acidity among my wines, noted Gros. Finishes firm and very long, in need of patience. A splendid village wine in the making, as it is most years, from a high-altitude site above RichebourgStephen Tanzer1st March 2015
