In many respects, Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair is a very recent wine estate, created at the beginning of the year 2000 by Count Louis-Michel Liger-Belair, agricultural engineer and oenologist, who took over the running of the select vineyard parcels remaining in the hands of the family. Yet it is in fact a domaine with over 200 years of family tradition at the service of the vines and wines of Burgundy and Vosne-Romanée in particular. Clos du Château produces a sophisticated Pinot Noir marked by minerality and tension from 45 year old vines.

The 2001 Vosne-Romanée Clos du Château was one of the first releases from Comte du Liger-Belair under Louis-Michel. It has a faded, russet hue in the glass. The nose is clean with leather and rosemary scents, little in the way of fruit but certainly agreeable. The palate is medium-bodied with tart red cherries on the entry, a touch of dried orange peel and sea salt. It is well balanced, light and airy, but the bottom line is that this Clos du Château is better than I had anticipated. Tasted at Sarah Marsh’s 2000 and 2001 horizontal tasting.
