With a family history that goes back to the French Revolution, Jean Grivot is considered one of the top and most consistent names in Vosne-Romanée. The Domaine is known for its intense, perfumed Pinot Noirs, with bright red fruit at their core. This particular cuvée hails from the Premier Cru ‘Aux Reignots’, where Grivot owns a tiny 0.07-hectare plot. This 1996 offers a complex structure with layers of earthy undertones and subtle fruit characteristics. On the palate, it offers a robust structure, with layers of red fruit, earthiness, and subtle spice.

There is a solitary barrel of the 2012 Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Aux Reignots this year, which is one more than there will be for 2013. This 2012 is being raised in one first used for the 2010. It has an understated but alluring bouquet with dark berry fruit, forest floor and citrus aromas, the stoniness developing reluctantly with time. The palate is medium-bodied with a candied entry. It is light on its feet, succulent to its very core but does not quite own the complexity or the structure of Les Beaux Monts on the straight-laced finish. Whoever gets one of the 300-odd bottles – do let me know how this works out, but like Cathiard’s own Aux Reignots, I was just expecting more given the repute of this premier cru. - Neal Martin

- (just one barrel made in 2012): Good bright red. Cooler aromas of black fruits and flowers. Intensely flavored and light on its feet, but in a distinctly imploded stage. This juicy, tightly wound wine is downright rigorous today. If the Brulees is a horizontal wine, this is vertical. Racy acidity gives it a slightly spiky impression. I would have guessed this wine was made with stems but in fact Grivot, who does not believe in vinifying whole clusters, used a good percentage of uncrushed berries in the fermentation.
