‘Aux Brûlées’ or ‘Les Brûlées’ is one of the 14 premier cru sites within the Vosne-Romanée appellation. The terroir here is famous for producing relatively full-bodied, concentrated wines with a spicy profile. This particular expression was produced by Michel Gros – the eldest son of the late Jean Gros – who owns a 0.63-hectare plot of 40-year-old vines. The 2010 vintage is a medium-bodied wine, with notes of cherry and raspberry, hints of anise and cloves are balanced by a lovely minerality and soft tannins.

Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Brûlées 2011 from Michel Gros has a reduced nose that rather subdues the red fruit and smudges much of the detail. The palate is supple in the mouth with fleshy ripe tannins, however the finish feels smudged and slightly bitter in the mouth. There is something a little forced about this Vosne-Romanée. - Neal Martin
