Domaine de Montille Volnay Les Taillepieds 2002 is a medium-bodied Burgundy red wine from the Premier Cru climat of Les Taillepieds in the Volnay appellation of the Côte de Beaune. With a family heritage that can be traced back to the 17th century, Domaine de Montille is renowned as one of the finest producers in Burgundy. The estate has been practising organic farming since 1995 and biodynamic since 2005. This particular release comes from the prized Volnay 1er Cru of Les Taillepieds. "Incredibly dense black fruit of remarkable complexity gives way to what may be the most concentrated mid-palate of the entire range with spicy, pure, deep, broad, indeed almost masculine flavours that possess absolutely stunning length. A great Taillepieds in the making and while the tannins are abundant and prominent, they are also fine. In short, this is a real stunner of a wine that should age for years and may very well be the Taillepieds of the vintage." Burghound, 2004

Medium red with a hint of development at the rim. Reticent aromas of raspberry, minerals and smoke. Extremely rich, sweet and mellow but not currently expressing itself. This was bottled late (in June of 2004) and may not yet have recovered from the process. Comes across as a bit less bright than the Champans but this is just muted today. Best on the very long, subtle, harmonious finish. This was a knockout from barrel a year ago, and I am confident that it will eventually merit an even higher score. But today it's painfully closed.Stephen Tanzer1st March 2005
