de Montille Volnay Les Taillepieds 1999 is a medium-bodied Burgundy red wine from the Premier Cru climat of Les Taillepieds in the Volnay appellation of the Côte de Beaune. With a family heritage that can be traced back to the 17th century, Domaine de Montille is renowned as one of the finest producers in Burgundy. The estate has been practising organic farming since 1995 and biodynamic since 2005. This particular release comes from the prized Volnay 1er Cru of Les Taillepieds. "Explosive, dense, rich fruit with big scale flavours and a solid underlying scaffolding of ripe tannins and superb length. Quite muscular yet for all the size, it remains firmly Volnay in character; a big Volnay perhaps but Volnay nonetheless. I was particularly impressed by the sense of balance and harmony here. Really extraordinary juice." Burghound, 2002

Vinous
Good bright, dark red with little sign of development. Stem-influenced aromas of black raspberry, wild herbs, menthol and savory soil tones. Fairly rich in the mouth but showing a distinctly medicinal aspect to its flavors of dark cherry, menthol and wild herbs. Finishes with very good length but the dusty tannins are a bit hard-edged and clenched. I'd say this wine still needs more time but will it expand? Etienne de Montille told me that 1999 was one of the first years when his father Hubert experimented with 100% whole-cluster vinification with this wine as well as his Volnay Mitans and Pommard Rugiens.
