Healthy dark red. Very reticent but pure aromas of blueberry, spices, licorice and minerals, plus a touch of chocolate. Quite closed and youthfully high-pitched, offering chewy blackberry and blueberry flavors supported by a firm tannic spine. This very backward wine, a bit sullen today, will need time in bottle to absorb its structure and become more pliant. The crop level here was just 18 hectoliters per hectare, according to Guillaume Boillot.Stephen Tanzer1st March 2016

Father and Son

In some ways, Henri Boillot has one foot in the past and one in the present. His family domaine, which he manages with his son Guillaume, has a history dating back to the 1880s, but the wines produced from their Meursault-based winery are undeniably modern, approachable and ranked among some of the very best in the region. Alongside operating a highly successful négociant business, the Boillot family own around 14 hectares of vineyards in the Côte de Beaune including a Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru monopole in the form of Clos de la Mouchère.

The winery don't shy away from the use of new oak and any overtly woody character is generally well balanced by ripe fruit. The Chardonnays range from citrus driven and fresher at the villages level all the way to ripe, tropical and creamy at the Grand Cru level. The reds are lighter and more elegant than they used to be with Henri's son Guillaume preferring a less extracted style of Pinot Noir.
