Volnay Champans Comtes Lafon 2014 is a Premier Cru from an iconic parcel situated mid-slope in Volnay Champans on clay-limestone soils. This wine presents notes of black cherry, violet and forest floor, supported by an elegant but firm tannic structure. Dominique Lafon’s signature maturation style provides a silky texture that coats the vibrant acidity of the vintage. It is an harmonious wine that is currently revealing its secondary nuances while maintaining fruit vibrancy.

Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, the 2014 Volnay 1er Cru Champans from Comtes Lafon has an endearing bouquet, one that is very harmonious. crushed strawberry and cranberry, fine mineralité and great delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with deftly chiseled tannin. This is very pure and refined, silky smooth in texture with a sensual, poised finish that lingers long in the mouth. What a gorgeous Volnay Champans from Dominique Lafon this is turning out to be! Tasted September 2017.

(25 hectoliters per hectare produced, as there was less hail damage here than in the Clos des Chènes): Medium red. Riper aromas of plum, redcurrant, medicinal cherry and milk chocolate. Nicely concentrated but closed; shows more material than the Clos des Chènes but not quite the seductive juiciness or floral lift of that wine. This a more medicinal style, with good inner-mouth tension and structure.Stephen Tanzer1st March 2017

30% new oak. He has changed to Chassin, which he finds more elegant. Solid and fresh without the charm of Clos des Chênes. Very dry finish. (JR)

A Singular Vision

Domaine des Comtes Lafon is widely considered to produce some of the world's greatest Chardonnay. Currently managed by fourth generation family member Dominique Lafon, who inherited the winery from his father René in the mid 1980s, Comtes Lafon own and source fruit from many of the greatest cru in the region - including Charmes, Clos de la Barre and Montrachet.

Dominique pursued a policy of converting all vineyards under Comtes Lafon's stewardship over to traditional farming methods - moving first to fully organic in 1995 and on to biodynamic in 1998. The average age of vines is around 40 years with yields kept low to ensure quality. Alongside his world class Chardonnay, Dominique also produces Premier Cru Volnay in limited quantities - a relatively new addition to the winery's portfolio, they are swiftly gaining a cult following.
