From the Côte de Beaune in Burgundy, this 2016 red wine is a Premier Cru expression crafted by Thibaud Clerget. Sourced from a 0.65-hectare plot of vines averaging 40 years in age, it reflects the unique characteristics of its site. The cooler 2016 vintage, impacted by a spring frost, yielded lower quantities yet concentrated flavours, resulting in an alcohol level of 13.5%. The wine underwent maturation in 20% new French oak, allowing for a balanced integration while maintaining the finesse typical of Pinot Noir. The tasting reveals notes of Red Cherry, Rose Petals, and a sandy minerality, embodying the signature elegance of Volnay.

Aromas of dark chocolate, spices, roast game bird and dark fruits introduce the 2016 Volnay 1er Cru Carelle Sous La Chapelle, a medium to full-bodied wine that`s quite firm and tight-knit at present, with firm, chewy tannins and grippy extract underpinned by tangy acids. It`s more closed than I remember it from barrel and will need some time to resolve.
Vinous
The 2016 Volnay Carelle Sous la Chapelle is deep and dense in the glass. Dark tonalities of fruit and powerful tannins are two of the signatures. It will be interesting to see if the 2016 gains more elegance during its aging. Today, the tannins are a bit tough. Even so, there is quite a bit of depth and richness to carry the wine`s balance. - Antonio GalloniStephen Tanzer1st January 2018
