Viña Tondonia Rioja Reserva Blanco López de Heredia 2014 is a Rioja white wine is crafted mainly from Viura grapes, with a small percentage of Malvasía. Vines are over 50 years old, grown on rocky, white soils that contribute to its profile. Fermentation occurs in traditional oak vats using native yeasts, followed by extensive ageing of six years in seasoned American oak barrels, allowing for the development of intricate flavours. López de Heredia has been producing wines since 1877, maintaining historic winemaking practices that emphasise authenticity and terroir. Expect a firm structure and a complex, savoury finish.

The 2014 Viña Tondonia Blanco Reserva has a bright golden color, almost fluorescent, a complex and nuanced nose reminiscent of the 2017 Viña Gravonia that I tasted next to it, toasty, smoky and spicy, with mushroom and earth, pollen and herbal tea notes, reminiscent of the aromas in their old caves. 2014 was not an easy vintage, and some wines were diluted because of the abundant rains before or during the harvest. This is the usual blend of Viura with 10% Malvasía Riojana from vines averaging 63 years of age on white soils with abundant rocks. It fermented in ancient oak vats with indigenous yeasts and matured for six years, probably more, in well-seasoned, neutral American oak barrels in their caves, which have a big effect on the wines (the longer the time in them, the longer the effect). It has 12.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.3 and 6.6 grams of acidity. It fills your mouth with pungent flavors, despite being medium-bodied and having an ethereal quality about it, and it`s very long and tasty and finishes almost salty, with an umami feeling, dry and chalky. Delicious, clean and still young, it should age effortlessly. 18,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in December 2022.

Mastery of traditional Rioja winemaking

A fixture in El Barrio del Estacion de Haro since 1877, R López de Heredia (also known as Viña Tondonia) is the prototypical traditionalist Rioja. Managed by Maria José López de Heredia and her winemaker sister, Mercedes, López de Heredia has mastered the ability to craft profound, long-lived wines in large volumes. Key to its success is its terroir – the grapes, soil and microclimate of its patch of Rioja Alta (all López de Heredia wines are produced with estate-grown fruit). Another factor is its insistence on extended ageing, in barrel and bottle, before releasing its wines. The flagship Viña Tondonia reserva, for example, is aged for five to six years in barrel (used American oak, Bordeaux-sized barrels), then up to a further six years in bottle before release; their longevity is legendary.

The reds start with Viña Cubillo: a crianza that is more akin to a Gran Reserva. Then there are the more concentrated Viña Bosconia and Viña Tondonia reservas. Bosconia is soft, full-bodied and earthy; Tondonia more finely structured and elegant. Both are Tempranillo-based, with smaller proportions of Mazuelo and Graciano. Look out for the oxidative white, Viña Gravonia, made from Viura grown in the estate’s Zaconia vineyard.
