The Vieux Château Certan 2014 is a Pomerol blend comprising 80% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Franc and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes were meticulously harvested in three separate phases between September 19 and October 8, achieving an average yield of 38.7 hectolitres per hectare, with an alcohol content of 13.4%. The wine showcases a nuanced bouquet of black fruits, herbal notes and mineral nuances. Its structure reveals a medium body, crisp acidity and refined tannins. Vieux Château Certan has been a notable Pomerol estate since the 18th century, underlining its storied legacy in the region.

Deep garnet-brick in color, the 2014 Vieux Chateau Certan is a little shy to start, offering up faint notes of candied violets and licorice opening out to a core of preserved plums and Christmas cake plus a waft of sandalwood. The full-bodied palate delivers a refreshing backbone and fine-grained tannins to support the taut, powerful black fruits, finishing long and earthy.Lisa Perrotti-Brown5th March 2024

Well judged, a more serious Pomerol than many, so subtle and beguiling in its construction, truffles, white pepper, cranberry, smoked earth, violet flowers, attractive floral edge and this is just gorgeous, grilled and wrapped up in caressing VCC tannins, with an intellectual edge, or rather an edge that keeps you engaged and wanting more.Jane Anson8th February 2024

The 2014 Vieux Château Certan comes from two bottles, the first out of condition. The second has a potent Cabernet Franc-driven nose, which is no surprise, as it comprises 30% of the blend: bell pepper and black pepper infusing the black fruit. There is almost a Loire-like scent. The palate is medium-bodied with granular tannins, fine acidity and grip with truffle and raspberry. It's earthy with just a touch of dark chocolate on the finish. This Pomerol is surfeit with character and is just about to enter its drinking window. Tasted at the VCC vertical in Etikhove, Belgium. Neal Martin30th July 2024

History on the Right Bank

A key Pomerol estate covering 14 hectares, Vieux Château Certan or "VCC" as it's sometimes known is regularly ranked as one of the Right Bank's top properties. The vineyard is planted with around 65% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Picking and sorting is done by hand and varietals are vinified separately in large oak vats. The juice destined for the Grand Vin is run off into 100% new oak for over 18 months before bottling.

The history of the estate dates back to at least the 16th century, when it was purchased by the Demay family from Scotland. The current owners, the Thienpont family, purchased the property in the mid-1920s and were instrumental in establishing their wine's reputation in the region.
