Vieux Château Certan 1999 is a Merlot-based blend from the Pomerol plateau on the Right Bank. Magnums of this vintage have matured with exceptional poise, benefiting from a slower rate of oxidation that preserves the delicate floral notes of the Cabernet Franc component. The 1999 growing season required careful selection due to late rain, yet this estate managed to capture a supple, velvety texture and deep earthy complexity. Expect resolved tannins and a palate defined by truffle, plum and forest floor rather than primary fruit intensity.

The 1999 Vieux Château Certan comes from a vintage that Alexandre Thienpont describes as a "Merlot year", comprising 85% of the blend. Picked at slightly higher yields than the previous vintage (38hl/ha), this has a disarmingly attractive bouquet: well-defined with black fruit, truffle and subtle gravelly scents. This is focused and fresh. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, fresh and spicier than the 1998. It's not a VCC of untrammeled power, yet it has real precision on the sapid finish. It's still holding something back, and it is a Pomerol that I would like to cellar longer based on this bottle. Tasted at the VCC vertical in Etikhove. Neal Martin30th July 2024

This 1999 is deep ruby/purple-colored, with a striking perfume of black cherries, truffles, cedar, and vanilla. This layered, opulently-textured wine displays extraordinary purity, elegance, and finesse. It is a classic Bordeaux with superb palate presence that builds incrementally on the palate. The finish is long, with plenty of sweet tannin. Very impressive! Three thousand cases of the 1999 were made from a blend of 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Last year it seemed to reveal an element of dilution, but as always, the truth is in the bottle, and presently there is no evidence of lightness or liquidity. Anticipated maturity. 2006-2018. - Robert M. Parker, Jr.

History on the Right Bank

A key Pomerol estate covering 14 hectares, Vieux Château Certan or "VCC" as it's sometimes known is regularly ranked as one of the Right Bank's top properties. The vineyard is planted with around 65% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Picking and sorting is done by hand and varietals are vinified separately in large oak vats. The juice destined for the Grand Vin is run off into 100% new oak for over 18 months before bottling.

The history of the estate dates back to at least the 16th century, when it was purchased by the Demay family from Scotland. The current owners, the Thienpont family, purchased the property in the mid-1920s and were instrumental in establishing their wine's reputation in the region.
