Vieux Château Certan 2015 is a Right Bank Bordeaux from the Pomerol appellation. This vintage is a blend of 80% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Franc and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon, reflecting the high proportion of old-vine Merlot that thrived in 2015. On the nose it reveals an elegant perfume of black cherries, violets, dark chocolate and a hint of truffle. The palate is full-bodied and seamless with silken tannins and a vibrant acidity that provides perfect poise. It displays a layered complexity of plums and liquorice leading into a long mineral finish.

Understated brilliance, with restraint shown in its precisely carved cassis and bilberry fruit on the opening, softening through the mid palate to show creamier raspberry and damson fruit, with black truffles and cocoa bean delivering the Pomerol caress. Expert construction, tannic architecture fully in focus but overlaid with the succulence of the vintage, such a good wine that has decades of it. . 50% new oak for ageing. The 2015 Vieux Château Certan vindicates my assessment from just a few months ago. This bottle still shows traces of VA when contrasted against, say, La Conseillante or Hosanna. The palate has a sweet entry with candied orange peel and cough candy notes. This has light tannins and a keen line of acidity, though again, it is unequivocally a little warm on the finish. Alexandre Thienpont never warmed to this vintage and though certainly not terrible, the 2015 is a slipped catch. Neal Martin3rd June 2025

Highest alcohol ever. 14.6%. 4,500 cases.Very intense nose with strong mineral notes – lots of Cabernet Franc influence. Massive impact with really luscious ripe fruit but massive tannins too. Very satiny initially but underneath there is massive tannin. Lovely fragrant top note. Beautifully married. Very sophisticated and with many layers. All vineyard not winemaking. Very savoury – very unlike Merlot stereotype. (JR)

History on the Right Bank

A key Pomerol estate covering 14 hectares, Vieux Château Certan or "VCC" as it's sometimes known is regularly ranked as one of the Right Bank's top properties. The vineyard is planted with around 65% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Picking and sorting is done by hand and varietals are vinified separately in large oak vats. The juice destined for the Grand Vin is run off into 100% new oak for over 18 months before bottling.

The history of the estate dates back to at least the 16th century, when it was purchased by the Demay family from Scotland. The current owners, the Thienpont family, purchased the property in the mid-1920s and were instrumental in establishing their wine's reputation in the region.
