Vieux Château Certan 2012 showcases a careful blend of 87% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced from the Pomerol estate’s low-yielding vines at 33 hl/ha. The year was marked by a cold, dry winter, followed by a cool, wet spring that led to reduced yields, followed by a hot, dry summer, contributing to the wine`s uniform ripening. The nose presents a combination of morello cherries, raspberries, and fine herbs, while the palate reflects the estate`s meticulous standards, achieving a delicate balance with a silky texture. Vieux Château Certan has been under family ownership since the mid-20th century, enhancing its commitment to quality.
The 2012 Vieux Chateau Certan is medium to deep garnet-purple colored. It charges out with impressively pure, laser-precise, and intense scents of blueberry compote, chocolate-covered cherries, and warm plum, plus hints of cinnamon toast, dried roses, and forest floor. Medium to full-bodied, rich, and oh-so-classy in the mouth, the palate delivers velvety tannins and compelling tension, finishing very long and opulent. Tasted at the Duquesne club in Pittsburgh during a wonderful event to celebrate their 150th anniversary. Still young at 13 years old, but the tannins are beginning to melt into the raspberry and redcurrant fruits, and the violet aromatics that you can spend years searching for in Pomerol uncurl out of the glass with barely a coaxing. Fine but plentiful tannins suggest this has decades ahead of it. Particularly special because George Thienpont bought the estate in 1924, meaning that next year in 2024 they are celebrating their 100th anniversary in the family. 50% new oak.Jane Anson7th December 2023

The 2012 Vieux Château Certan comes from a late harvest picked from October 1. The Cabernet is potent on the nose, not dissimilar to the 2008 with Montecristo cigars and undergrowth infusing the black fruit. Certainly, this is pretty Left Bank in style. The palate is well-balanced with a slightly herbaceous, peppery entry. Espresso notes infuse the black fruit with a structured finish. I just feel the oak a little here and find more composure on the 2011 by direct comparison. Tasted at the VCC vertical in Etikhove, Belgium. Neal Martin30th July 2024

History on the Right Bank
A key Pomerol estate covering 14 hectares, Vieux Château Certan or "VCC" as it's sometimes known is regularly ranked as one of the Right Bank's top properties. The vineyard is planted with around 65% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Picking and sorting is done by hand and varietals are vinified separately in large oak vats. The juice destined for the Grand Vin is run off into 100% new oak for over 18 months before bottling.
The history of the estate dates back to at least the 16th century, when it was purchased by the Demay family from Scotland. The current owners, the Thienpont family, purchased the property in the mid-1920s and were instrumental in establishing their wine's reputation in the region.
