Vieux Château Certan is a distinguished wine estate located within the Pomerol appellation, covering approximately 14 hectares. A significant portion of the vines boasts an impressive age, with some dating back to 1932. This particular offering is their Grand Vin from the 1990 vintage, which appears to have reached its zenith. On the nose, expect red fruits and evolving tertiary notes of cigar complemented by freshly cut grass. Tipping towards sweetness, the palate presents a fruit profile dominated by red and black currants along with cherries.

This was a very strong vintage for Vieux Chateau Certan. The 1990 reveals a deep garnet color to the rim along with a sweet bouquet of charcoal, licorice, roasted herbs, forest floor, and a meaty, truffle-like scent. A fleshy, full-bodied wine with exceptionally low acidity, plenty of melted tannin, and a long, layered finish, this beauty is close to full maturity, but it is in no danger of falling apart. It should keep for another 15+ years. Release price: ($590.00/case)Robert Parker30th June 2009

The 1990 Vieux Château Certan is a vintage that underwent rigorous crop-thinning, and Alexandre Thienpont opines that its success is founded on the Merlot, a wine that he sees as a blend of 1988 and 1989. Maybe a little Brettanomyces? But it is very minor and does not denude it of pleasure, albeit in a Rhône-like style; it gains vigor in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly rustic tannins, mulberry and leather, bay leaf and a touch of desiccated orange peel. Some heat comes through on the finish, though overall, I prefer this to the 1989 by direct comparison, even if the bottle four years ago showed better. Tasted at the VCC vertical in Etikhove. History on the Right Bank

A key Pomerol estate covering 14 hectares, Vieux Château Certan or "VCC" as it's sometimes known is regularly ranked as one of the Right Bank's top properties. The vineyard is planted with around 65% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Picking and sorting is done by hand and varietals are vinified separately in large oak vats. The juice destined for the Grand Vin is run off into 100% new oak for over 18 months before bottling.

The history of the estate dates back to at least the 16th century, when it was purchased by the Demay family from Scotland. The current owners, the Thienpont family, purchased the property in the mid-1920s and were instrumental in establishing their wine's reputation in the region.
