The 2018 Valbuena No.5 originates from a cooler vintage, which, despite its bountiful yields, required meticulous sorting and selection to create a vertically structured expression of Valbuena. The wine was skilfully crafted using 96% Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) and 4% Merlot, and it underwent aging in a combination of both new and used 225-liter oak barrels, along with 21,000-liter oak vats. Notably, this vintage of Valbuena exudes a spicy character, bringing it closer to the style of its sibling, Único. On the palate, the wine unveils a medium to full-bodied presence, further enhanced by fine tannins, which contribute to its beautifully textured and elegant nature. Available here in a magnum bottle.
Located in Ribera del Duero, Vega Sicilia was founded in 1864 by Don Eloy Lecanda y Chaves, who established the vineyards with cuttings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec taken from the vineyards of Bordeaux. The estate planted Tempranillo alongside these Bordelais varietals, which now makes up the majority of the modern Vega Sicilia blend.
The flagship wines are Unico and Unico Reserva Especial - the former is aged for 10 years before release while the latter is a blend of only the finest vintages. Valbuena 5 is the estate's 'entry level' wine, a five year aged Tempranillo. Alongside Vega Sicilia, the same team also manage Bodegas Alion in Ribera del Duero and Bodegas Pintia in Toro.
