Vega Sicilia Valbuena 5 2006 is a full-bodied red wine produced from Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) grapes in the Ribera del Duero region of Spain. Vega Sicilia was founded in 1864 by Don Eloy Lecanda y Chaves, who established the vineyards with cuttings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec taken from the vineyards of Bordeaux. The estate planted Tempranillo alongside these Bordelais varietals, which now makes up the majority of the modern Vega Sicilia blend. Valbuena is the purest expression of Tinto Fino at Vega Sicilia. The other variety used is Merlot, which is added to a greater or lesser extent depending on the vintage. The 2006 is available here in magnum format. "Starting on 9 September, 2006 was one of the earliest vintages here - the unusually hot spring and sunny summer served to bring in a classic vintage. The wine is generous, full-bodied, plump and fleshy, bursting with red plum and floral notes spiked with citrus. It`s harmonious, well-balanced and finely spiced, with more American (60%) than French oak used for the period of ageing in new barrels. This is the last year where Malbec is blended with the Merlot. Enjoy now, though there`s plenty of time ahead of it still." Sarah Jane Evans MW, 2018

Deep ruby. Heady, exotic bouquet evokes candied cherry, cassis, sassafras, vanilla and potpourri, plus a smoky overtone. Sappy and expansive but energetic, offering sweet cherry and floral pastille flavors lifted by spice and mineral notes. Gains sweetness with air and finishes with superb clarity and spicy persistence. This benefits enormously from aeration but really should be stashed away for at least another five years. Spain's 'First Growth'

Located in Ribera del Duero, Vega Sicilia was founded in 1864 by Don Eloy Lecanda y Chaves, who established the vineyards with cuttings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec taken from the vineyards of Bordeaux. The estate planted Tempranillo alongside these Bordelais varietals, which now makes up the majority of the modern Vega Sicilia blend.

The flagship wines are Unico and Unico Reserva Especial - the former is aged for 10 years before release while the latter is a blend of only the finest vintages. Valbuena 5 is the estate's 'entry level' wine, a five year aged Tempranillo. Alongside Vega Sicilia, the same team also manage Bodegas Alion in Ribera del Duero and Bodegas Pintia in Toro.
