Vega Sicilia Valbuena 5 2020 showcases a blend primarily consisting of 97% Tinto Fino and 3% Merlot, emerging from a vintage characterised by significant rainfall prior to harvest. This vintage produced a wine with 14% alcohol, a pH of 3.9, and 4.45 grams of acidity. The wine undergoes fermentation with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel before maturing in a combination of barrels and oak vats, for one year each. Valbuena 5 is notable for its medium body and fine-grained tannins, presenting a structure that evolves with aeration. Vega Sicilia, established in 1864, remains a benchmark producer in Spain`s Ribera del Duero.
17.5 Jancis Robinson
97% Tinto Fino, 3% Merlot. From the famous Vega Sicilia vineyard, located between 720 and 930 m above sea level on a limestone marl soil. For the first year of ageing, barrels (80% French, 20% American). For the second year, 6,000- and 9,000-litre foudres. 6 months in stainless steel for blending and 30 months of resting in the bottle. Production. 186,286 bottles, 5,673 magnums, 400 double magnums, 35 Imperials and 5 Salmanazars. It has been a year in which the vineyard gave less concentration, so the oenological work is impressive because the wine shows intensity, the presence of ripe black fruit and tannin that is sweet in the mid palate but ends up being drier on the finish. Very ripe black fruit and a touch of violet stand out. Little oak impact for the Valbuena style. This is one of the most tactile vintages and still has many years ahead of it. Dense texture, powerful, and still very primary for the average Valbuena. (FC)

Spain's 'First Growth'

Located in Ribera del Duero, Vega Sicilia was founded in 1864 by Don Eloy Lecanda y Chaves, who established the vineyards with cuttings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec taken from the vineyards of Bordeaux. The estate planted Tempranillo alongside these Bordelais varietals, which now makes up the majority of the modern Vega Sicilia blend.

The flagship wines are Unico and Unico Reserva Especial - the former is aged for 10 years before release while the latter is a blend of only the finest vintages. Valbuena 5 is the estate's 'entry level' wine, a five year aged Tempranillo. Alongside Vega Sicilia, the same team also manage Bodegas Alion in Ribera del Duero and Bodegas Pintia in Toro.
