Vega Sicilia Valbuena 5 2005 presents a deep garnet hue with a complex aromatic profile revealing notes of dark berries, tobacco, and subtle herbal undertones. The palate showcases a medium-bodied structure, combining layers of ripe fruit, graphite, and spice, leading to a measured, persistent finish. This vintage, composed primarily of Tempranillo, is characterised by its balance and finesse. The wine undergoes three years of ageing in oak and an additional two years in bottle before release. Founded in 1864, Bodegas Vega Sicilia is renowned for its meticulous approach to winemaking, contributing significantly to the reputation of Spanish wines on the international stage. Cellaring until 2021 is recommended for full expression.

Bright ruby. Complex bouquet melds dried cherry, licorice, potpourri and minerals, plus a subtle smoky undertone. Very sweet and creamy in texture, offering intense red fruit flavors that gain power and spiciness with aeration. Picks up notes of cassis and cherry pit on the back end and finishes with impressive breadth and lingering sweetness. This is still a baby. By the way, the 1998 has years ahead of it but is showing a wild, pungent bouquet of dried herbs and flowers and excellent, mineral-driven red fruit right now.Josh Raynolds1st September 2010

Spain's 'First Growth'

Located in Ribera del Duero, Vega Sicilia was founded in 1864 by Don Eloy Lecanda y Chaves, who established the vineyards with cuttings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec taken from the vineyards of Bordeaux. The estate planted Tempranillo alongside these Bordelais varietals, which now makes up the majority of the modern Vega Sicilia blend.

The flagship wines are Unico and Unico Reserva Especial - the former is aged for 10 years before release while the latter is a blend of only the finest vintages. Valbuena 5 is the estate's 'entry level' wine, a five year aged Tempranillo. Alongside Vega Sicilia, the same team also manage Bodegas Alion in Ribera del Duero and Bodegas Pintia in Toro.
