Vega Sicilia Valbuena 5 1997 is a Tempranillo-based red from the renowned Ribera del Duero region of Spain. This wine showcases a blend of Tempranillo (around 85%) and Merlot (approximately 15%), highlighting the winery`s focus on family heritage and traditional winemaking. The wine presents aromas of cherry, tobacco and leather. The palate is marked by firm tannins and vibrant acidity, which have evolved over time to reveal more nuanced flavours of dried herbs and earth.

Colour almost deeper than the 1998 (because of the unusual 15 per cent Cabernet deepening the Tinto Fino aka Tempranillo?). Very mellow rich, supple nose. Spicy, high VA. Lovely nose but a bit austere on the start of the palate. Velvety middle but very dry on the finish. (JR)

Spain's 'First Growth'

Located in Ribera del Duero, Vega Sicilia was founded in 1864 by Don Eloy Lecanda y Chaves, who established the vineyards with cuttings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec taken from the vineyards of Bordeaux. The estate planted Tempranillo alongside these Bordelais varietals, which now makes up the majority of the modern Vega Sicilia blend.

The flagship wines are Unico and Unico Reserva Especial - the former is aged for 10 years before release while the latter is a blend of only the finest vintages. Valbuena 5 is the estate's 'entry level' wine, a five year aged Tempranillo. Alongside Vega Sicilia, the same team also manage Bodegas Alion in Ribera del Duero and Bodegas Pintia in Toro.
