Vega Sicilia Valbuena 5° 1991 is a full-bodied red wine from the Ribera del Duero region, crafted primarily from Tempranillo, with a minor proportion of Merlot. The 5° designation signifies a minimal ageing period of five years in a mix of new and used French and American oak barrels, alongside traditional large wooden vats. The 1991 vintage presents as a rich and opulent wine, with notes of black cherry fruit, cedar and dried herbs, all integrated with toasty new oak and spice.

The new releases from Spain`s most famous winery include the 1991 Valbuena, a rich, opulent, fleshy, jammy wine with a deep ruby/purple color, full body, and gobs of sweet black cherry fruit intertwined with toasty new oak and spice. The wine is ripe, fleshy, expansive, and ideal for drinking now and over the next decade. - Robert M. Parker, Jr.

Spain's 'First Growth'

Located in Ribera del Duero, Vega Sicilia was founded in 1864 by Don Eloy Lecanda y Chaves, who established the vineyards with cuttings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec taken from the vineyards of Bordeaux. The estate planted Tempranillo alongside these Bordelais varietals, which now makes up the majority of the modern Vega Sicilia blend.

The flagship wines are Unico and Unico Reserva Especial - the former is aged for 10 years before release while the latter is a blend of only the finest vintages. Valbuena 5 is the estate's 'entry level' wine, a five year aged Tempranillo. Alongside Vega Sicilia, the same team also manage Bodegas Alion in Ribera del Duero and Bodegas Pintia in Toro.
