Vega Sicilia Único 1999 is a full-bodied red blend from the Ribera del Duero region of Spain. This vintage consists of 90% Tempranillo and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, harvested during a year marked by a challenging frost in mid-April followed by a hot, dry summer. The wine underwent nearly 10 years of ageing in large and small oak barrels before its release. It displays a sophisticated balance between ripe dark fruit, leather and toasted spice, with the Cabernet component providing a firm tannic spine that suggests many more years of evolution.

Ruby-red. Shockingly deep in color for a ten-year-old wine. Explosive aromas of cherry compote, black raspberry, blood orange, Asian spices and smoky minerals. Pure, vibrant and sweet, offering intense cherry and red berry flavors, with tangy mineral spine and an exotic smokiness. Extremely deep but energetic, with a powerful echo of minerals and singed orange on the endless finish. This is remarkably youthful but highly alluring already. Josh Raynolds1st September 2009

Showstopping. What an impressive display – raspberry, popcorn, and your favourite old leather armchair – utterly romantic. The tannin is still erect despite all the ageing, with a hedonistic finish of mint and chocolate, fine liqueur fruit and excellent texture. (RH)

Spain's 'First Growth'

Located in Ribera del Duero, Vega Sicilia was founded in 1864 by Don Eloy Lecanda y Chaves, who established the vineyards with cuttings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec taken from the vineyards of Bordeaux. The estate planted Tempranillo alongside these Bordelais varietals, which now makes up the majority of the modern Vega Sicilia blend.

The flagship wines are Unico and Unico Reserva Especial - the former is aged for 10 years before release while the latter is a blend of only the finest vintages. Valbuena 5 is the estate's 'entry level' wine, a five year aged Tempranillo. Alongside Vega Sicilia, the same team also manage Bodegas Alion in Ribera del Duero and Bodegas Pintia in Toro.
