Vega Sicilia Unico Magnum 1996 is a notable red wine from the Ribera del Duero region of Spain, primarily crafted from Tempranillo. Established in 1864, Vega Sicilia has a rich legacy, with Don Eloy Lecanda y Chaves introducing Bordeaux varietals to the estate. This magnum is a product of extensive ageing, reflecting the complexities of over two decades. On the nose, expect earthy notes of leather and tobacco, while the palate offers a blend of dark fruit and subtle herbal undertones. Its structure reveals balanced tannins, culminating in a lingering finish indicative of a wine in its mature phase.

Deep ruby. Complex, heady bouquet of kirsch, candied plum, cured tobacco, licorice, dried rose and cedar. Pungent herbal notes build with aeration and repeat on the palate, adding complexity to the deep, ripe cherry and dark berry liqueur flavors. Remarkably elegant wine with precise cherry/berry flavors and a slow-mounting mocha quality on the long, sappy finish. There's a very impressive interplay of fruit and tannins here. Spain's 'First Growth'

Located in Ribera del Duero, Vega Sicilia was founded in 1864 by Don Eloy Lecanda y Chaves, who established the vineyards with cuttings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec taken from the vineyards of Bordeaux. The estate planted Tempranillo alongside these Bordelais varietals, which now makes up the majority of the modern Vega Sicilia blend.

The flagship wines are Unico and Unico Reserva Especial - the former is aged for 10 years before release while the latter is a blend of only the finest vintages. Valbuena 5 is the estate's 'entry level' wine, a five year aged Tempranillo. Alongside Vega Sicilia, the same team also manage Bodegas Alion in Ribera del Duero and Bodegas Pintia in Toro.
