A red wine from the Ribera del Duero region, Vega Sicilia Unico Magnum 1994 is a blend of Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon, with an alcohol content of 13.5%. The 1994 vintage benefited from optimal growing conditions, yielding grapes of considerable concentration and impeccable balance. This magnum spent nearly a decade maturing in a mix of large vats and small oak barrels, allowing for gradual integration of its components. The result is a complex profile of dried plums, leather, and exotic spices. As a reflection of the winemaker`s commitment to quality, this wine embodies the esteemed heritage of Vega Sicilia, a pioneer in Spanish viticulture.

Another very good vintage. Potent but with good acidity – maybe even too potent initially but age tames them. Looks deep but mature. Mellow, complex, mature nose. Just a hint of mint. Broader than the 1996. Finishes quite dry after a plump palate. Maybe the acidity and tannin are just a little more marked than in the 1996 but these two wines taste really quite similar. A bit chewier than the 1996 on the finish perhaps. (JR)

Spain's 'First Growth'

Located in Ribera del Duero, Vega Sicilia was founded in 1864 by Don Eloy Lecanda y Chaves, who established the vineyards with cuttings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec taken from the vineyards of Bordeaux. The estate planted Tempranillo alongside these Bordelais varietals, which now makes up the majority of the modern Vega Sicilia blend.

The flagship wines are Unico and Unico Reserva Especial - the former is aged for 10 years before release while the latter is a blend of only the finest vintages. Valbuena 5 is the estate's 'entry level' wine, a five year aged Tempranillo. Alongside Vega Sicilia, the same team also manage Bodegas Alion in Ribera del Duero and Bodegas Pintia in Toro.
