Vega Sicilia Único 2002 is a distinguished red wine from Spain`s Ribera del Duero region, primarily composed of Tempranillo, with small additions of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The 2002 vintage faced a challenging, rainy harvest, leading to rigorous grape selection and resulting in less than half the usual production. Despite these conditions, the wine exhibits a complex bouquet of chocolate, sweet spice, black cherries, and nuts. On the palate, it is vibrant with balanced acidity, presenting powerful yet sweet flavours reminiscent of oranges dipped in chocolate. The firm, well-integrated tannins suggest significant ageing potential, with an anticipated drinking window extending through 2032 and beyond
Bright ruby. Smoky, floral-accented aromas of redcurrant, cherry pit and plum, with a peppery topnote. Sweet and open-knit, offering musky red fruit and floral pastille flavors and notes of mocha and succulent herbs. Shows very good depth and power for the vintage, finishing smooth, sweet and long. Not the greatest Vega by any means but highly successful for 2002, and you can actually enjoy it right now.Josh Raynolds1st September 2012

20% of Cabernet and those unknown grapes spice the Tempranillo this year. Tasted straight after the Valbuena of the same vintage this nose was immediately much more compelling. Taut, exciting, multi-faceted, the wine seemed quite different from older vintages – maybe simply because I have never tasted older vintages at this early stage – but I couldn`t help but see the resemblance to the smooth richness of Pomerol. Compared with the Toro wine though, this has much more savouriness. (JR)

Spain's 'First Growth'
Located in Ribera del Duero, Vega Sicilia was founded in 1864 by Don Eloy Lecanda y Chaves, who established the vineyards with cuttings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec taken from the vineyards of Bordeaux. The estate planted Tempranillo alongside these Bordelais varietals, which now makes up the majority of the modern Vega Sicilia blend.
The flagship wines are Unico and Unico Reserva Especial - the former is aged for 10 years before release while the latter is a blend of only the finest vintages. Valbuena 5 is the estate's 'entry level' wine, a five year aged Tempranillo. Alongside Vega Sicilia, the same team also manage Bodegas Alion in Ribera del Duero and Bodegas Pintia in Toro.
