Established in 1864, Vega Sicilia is steeped in history and has played a pivotal role in elevating Spanish wines to global prominence. Located in the Ribera del Duero, the winery is renowned for its meticulous craftsmanship and unwavering commitment to excellence. The 1995 Vega Sicilia Unico is in a great drinking window right now, evoking aromas of candied raspberries layered with spice cake. Very forward on the palate, with lovely acidity and balance. Medium to full bodied with a long gratifying finish.

Dark red. Intense, expressive aromas of blackberry, blueberry, cherry liqueur, sandalwood, cigar box, roasted coffee and exotic chocolate. Thick and sweet, with deep red and dark berry flavors complicated by an array of pungent spices, mocha, vanilla bean and cured tobacco. Deep, penetrating and very long on the finish, with wonderfully sweet cherry and blackcurrant flavors lingering. Built to age, but this is awfully delicious right now. Josh Raynolds1st September 2006

85% Tinto Fino, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon. Harvest 27 September. Post fermentation the wine remained in large-capacity wooden vats for 22 months. It then matured for 22 months in new casks, 28 months in second-use casks and 24 months in large capacity wooden vats. 88,340 bottles, 2,247 magnums, 149 double magnums. From magnum.A light gamey note and lots of punch. Unlike 1999 this has just enough fruit density to carry the high acidity. Chalky finish. Remarkably youthful.(JR)

Spain's 'First Growth'

Located in Ribera del Duero, Vega Sicilia was founded in 1864 by Don Eloy Lecanda y Chaves, who established the vineyards with cuttings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec taken from the vineyards of Bordeaux. The estate planted Tempranillo alongside these Bordelais varietals, which now makes up the majority of the modern Vega Sicilia blend.

The flagship wines are Unico and Unico Reserva Especial - the former is aged for 10 years before release while the latter is a blend of only the finest vintages. Valbuena 5 is the estate's 'entry level' wine, a five year aged Tempranillo. Alongside Vega Sicilia, the same team also manage Bodegas Alion in Ribera del Duero and Bodegas Pintia in Toro.
