A complex, Tempranillo-dominant red from the 1994 vintage. Vega Sicilia is a legend among Spanish wine producers, established in 1864 at the western end of what is now the Ribera del Duero DO. The flagship wine, Unico, is Spain’s undisputed equivalent of a first growth. The historic estate went through several changes of ownership before being bought by the Álvarez family in 1982. Meticulously detailed viticulture feeds into a complex, multi-stage ageing process that gives these wines a vibrancy and integration quite unlike any of their Ribera del Duero peers.

Another very good vintage. Potent but with good acidity – maybe even too potent initially but age tames them. Looks deep but mature. Mellow, complex, mature nose. Just a hint of mint. Broader than the 1996. Finishes quite dry after a plump palate. Maybe the acidity and tannin are just a little more marked than in the 1996 but these two wines taste really quite similar. A bit chewier than the 1996 on the finish perhaps. (JR)

Spain's 'First Growth'

Located in Ribera del Duero, Vega Sicilia was founded in 1864 by Don Eloy Lecanda y Chaves, who established the vineyards with cuttings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec taken from the vineyards of Bordeaux. The estate planted Tempranillo alongside these Bordelais varietals, which now makes up the majority of the modern Vega Sicilia blend.

The flagship wines are Unico and Unico Reserva Especial - the former is aged for 10 years before release while the latter is a blend of only the finest vintages. Valbuena 5 is the estate's 'entry level' wine, a five year aged Tempranillo. Alongside Vega Sicilia, the same team also manage Bodegas Alion in Ribera del Duero and Bodegas Pintia in Toro.
