Vega Sicilia holds legendary status among Spanish wine producers, having been founded in 1864 in the western reaches of what is today the Ribera del Duero DO. Its flagship wine ‘Unico’ is often equated to Spain`s First Growth wines. The 1985 vintage has beautifully matured into a highly complex wine, showcasing precise scents of gingerbread, an abundance of pure red berries, hints of blue fruit, mineral notes, and an array of herbs. It continually evolves and unfolds, underpinned by a finely integrated structure and a robust acidic backbone.

The 1985 Único comes from an era where I feel that Vega Sicilia was not firing on all cylinders, unlike the 1960s, or indeed post-2000. This has a potent nose of plush red fruit laced with mocha, dark chocolate and sage. This has fine definition, yet it lacks the amplitude of the very best vintages that I have encountered. The palate is well built with layers of glycerine-rich red berry fruit commingling with tobacco and light bacon/Italian meat notes. Quite grippy on the finish, though without the precision one might expect, this represents a satisfying though not sensational Unico. Tasted twice at Noble Rot restaurant in London, then blind at the Domaine de Chevalier "5" soirée. Neal Martin17th June 2025

Spain's 'First Growth'

Located in Ribera del Duero, Vega Sicilia was founded in 1864 by Don Eloy Lecanda y Chaves, who established the vineyards with cuttings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec taken from the vineyards of Bordeaux. The estate planted Tempranillo alongside these Bordelais varietals, which now makes up the majority of the modern Vega Sicilia blend.

The flagship wines are Unico and Unico Reserva Especial - the former is aged for 10 years before release while the latter is a blend of only the finest vintages. Valbuena 5 is the estate's 'entry level' wine, a five year aged Tempranillo. Alongside Vega Sicilia, the same team also manage Bodegas Alion in Ribera del Duero and Bodegas Pintia in Toro.
