Vega Sicilia is perhaps Spain’s most revered estate and has a global reputation for consistently producing exceptionally high-quality red wines with extraordinary capacity to age. Único is the flagship wine and is a blend of mostly Tempranillo with a small portion of Cabernet Sauvignon and is aged for almost 6 years in oak and 4 years in bottle before release. Here is an exciting find from 1976. Aged Único often drinks like fine Bordeaux with rich black fruits, incredible savoury nuance and wonderfully silky texture.
16.5 Jancis Robinson
A year with average rain, a cold winter and a mild spring. The vegetative cycle was long, with less sun than average and slow maturation. The harvest started on 12 October. 70% Tinto Fino, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot, Malbec and Albillo (a local white grape usually found together with the reds in old vineyards). The wine spent 24 months in big oak vats followed by another 24 months in 575-litre `bocoyes`, three years in used barriques and a further 30 months in large vats. It was a short vintage, bottled in 37,500 bottles and 1,500 magnums. The DO did not exist at the time of the harvest, but as the bottles were sold in 1987 and 1988 (and the magnums in 1990) it got the DO label.A ripe wine, it hints at a powerful vintage. Very balsamic (menthol), it develops slowly in the nose. The mouth is powerful and persistent. (LG)

Spain's 'First Growth'

Located in Ribera del Duero, Vega Sicilia was founded in 1864 by Don Eloy Lecanda y Chaves, who established the vineyards with cuttings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec taken from the vineyards of Bordeaux. The estate planted Tempranillo alongside these Bordelais varietals, which now makes up the majority of the modern Vega Sicilia blend.

The flagship wines are Unico and Unico Reserva Especial - the former is aged for 10 years before release while the latter is a blend of only the finest vintages. Valbuena 5 is the estate's 'entry level' wine, a five year aged Tempranillo. Alongside Vega Sicilia, the same team also manage Bodegas Alion in Ribera del Duero and Bodegas Pintia in Toro.
