Vega Sicilia Único 1969 is a historical bottling from the iconic Vega Sicilia estate in Ribera del Duero. This release represents a classic era for Vega Sicilia, when the wine was often aged for over a decade in wood before being released. Now at an advanced age, it displays a sophisticated tertiary profile of dried leather, tobacco, truffles and faded roses. The palate remains remarkably intact, showing the extraordinary longevity for which the estate is justly celebrated.

It was the first time that I had tasted the 1969 Unico, a blend of 85% Tinto Fino, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, Malbec and Albillo. There is a sense of delicacy on the nose that marks it out from the 1970. Slightly faded red fruit mixes with licorice and star anise. The 1969 coheres wonderfully in the glass and becomes more Bordeaux-like with aeration. You could almost describe the aromatics as “polite”. The palate is sweet and sensual on the entry, a beautiful Unico with subtle notes of wild mint and fennel. This is nicely structured, not a powerful wine, yet it exerts an insistent grip toward the finish, suggesting there is still petrol in the tank. I would not hesitate to crack open a bottle if you have one in your cellar.Neal Martin8th January 2024

Toffee, dried black fruit, herbs. If the 74 made me smile, this is making me laugh. (Yikes – there’s an NV Reserva Especiale to come! I might have a fit.) Smoke, vegetal, compost, black olives – an unequivocal triumph of history, personality, terroir. The finish is a second coming of profundity – length, complexity, and liveliness. It’s like being submersed in a sensory deprivation tank filled with wine. All-consuming. Tremendous. (RH)

Spain's 'First Growth'

Located in Ribera del Duero, Vega Sicilia was founded in 1864 by Don Eloy Lecanda y Chaves, who established the vineyards with cuttings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec taken from the vineyards of Bordeaux. The estate planted Tempranillo alongside these Bordelais varietals, which now makes up the majority of the modern Vega Sicilia blend.

The flagship wines are Unico and Unico Reserva Especial - the former is aged for 10 years before release while the latter is a blend of only the finest vintages. Valbuena 5 is the estate's 'entry level' wine, a five year aged Tempranillo. Alongside Vega Sicilia, the same team also manage Bodegas Alion in Ribera del Duero and Bodegas Pintia in Toro.
