Crafted by Vega Sicilia, Alión stands as an exceptional Ribera del Duero wine, meticulously produced from a selection of vineyards sprawling across 130 hectares, with 70 hectares situated on the estate itself. The 2019 vintage boasts an enticing nose, releasing aromas of ripe, tarry plums and black cherries, beautifully intertwined with notes of violets, mineral-rich rocks, coffee, and graphite. Refined nuances of balsamic fruit and cocoa powder add further depth to its aromatic profile. Upon tasting, the wine unfolds with a full-bodied and succulent presence, its character firmly held by an iron fist of tannins, yet simultaneously displaying a velvety and polished texture. While enjoyable now, its true potential will flourish even more after 2025.
Located in Ribera del Duero, Vega Sicilia was founded in 1864 by Don Eloy Lecanda y Chaves, who established the vineyards with cuttings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec taken from the vineyards of Bordeaux. The estate planted Tempranillo alongside these Bordelais varietals, which now makes up the majority of the modern Vega Sicilia blend.
The flagship wines are Unico and Unico Reserva Especial - the former is aged for 10 years before release while the latter is a blend of only the finest vintages. Valbuena 5 is the estate's 'entry level' wine, a five year aged Tempranillo. Alongside Vega Sicilia, the same team also manage Bodegas Alion in Ribera del Duero and Bodegas Pintia in Toro.
