Vega Sicilia Alion 1995 is a full-bodied expression of Tempranillo (Tinto Fino) from Ribera del Duero. First produced in 1991, Alion reflects Vega Sicilia`s commitment to quality and terroir, emphasising a modern interpretation of Ribera del Duero red wine. This vintage reveals concentrated notes of dark cherry and plum, alongside earthy undertones. The oak influence is judiciously applied, enhancing complexity. Fine tannins and balanced acidity shape its structure, leading to a lingering finish.
16.5 Jancis Robinson
A difficult year because it had a spring frost like 2001, even if not so extreme. But it’s a slimmer wine than the 1994 or 1996 and based on its nose and complexity on nose. Poor 1995 is between two great vintages. In its final stage and the wine need lots of air.Dark crimson with a pale rim. Quite dark with a brick rim. Gamey, a little old and leathery on the nose. Soft and gentle on the palate with pretty stringy astringent tannins on the finish. Chewy finish but very long and warm too. The oldest wine so far but an attractive drink with food, I could imagine. Just a little skinny. Interesting minty note on the finish.(JR)

Spain's 'First Growth'

Located in Ribera del Duero, Vega Sicilia was founded in 1864 by Don Eloy Lecanda y Chaves, who established the vineyards with cuttings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec taken from the vineyards of Bordeaux. The estate planted Tempranillo alongside these Bordelais varietals, which now makes up the majority of the modern Vega Sicilia blend.

The flagship wines are Unico and Unico Reserva Especial - the former is aged for 10 years before release while the latter is a blend of only the finest vintages. Valbuena 5 is the estate's 'entry level' wine, a five year aged Tempranillo. Alongside Vega Sicilia, the same team also manage Bodegas Alion in Ribera del Duero and Bodegas Pintia in Toro.
