Having only been established in 1989, Jean-Luc Thunevin and Murielle Andraud have achieved an incredible amount in a short space of time with Château Valandraud, gaining St-Émilion Premier Grand Cru Classé (B) status and earning a reputation as one of the benchmark producers of the region. The 2017 is full-bodied yet plush and supple, offering concentrated notes of black cherry, plum, exotic spices, liquorice, espresso and woodsmoke. This is a flamboyant and bold expression of Merlot (with small amounts of Cabernets Franc and Sauvignon) but is superbly tempered by bright acidity and tight-knit tannins.

One of the stars of the vintage, the 2017 Valandraud has turned out even better than I expected. It was magnificent in two separate tastings. Deep and sumptuous, the 2017 possesses off-the-charts intensity and power. Dark red cherry, red plum, chocolate, licorice and spice build as this explosive wine shows off its personality. There are only a few wines in 2017 that are truly exciting and viscerally thrilling. Valandraud is one of them. Don't miss it! Antonio Galloni1st March 2020

A success in a cooler vintage that is offering a real moment of pleasure right now. This is packed with juicy black fruits, layered and nuanced with liqourice and spiced plum, with a crayon and salted cracker finish that showcases the cool clay-limestone soils of Valandraud's vineyard site. This feels vivid and full of life, and as ever I'm a fan of Valandraud in years where nature puts the breaks of what is, as I described it when tasting in bottle years ago, 'Thunevin's irrepresible nod towards exuberance'. 100% new oak.Jane Anson13th June 2024

The deep garnet-purple colored 2017 Valandraud gives up crushed blackcurrants, chocolate-covered cherries and espresso on the nose with hints of licorice, tar and smoked meats. The palate is medium-bodied with a solid frame of ripe, sweet tannins and just enough freshness to contain the bombastic fruit, finishing long and berry-laced.Lisa Perrotti-Brown27th April 2018
