Situated along Napa Valley’s Oakville bench, the Ulysses vineyard was once part of the famed Charles Hopper ranch and was acquired by Christian Moueix in 2008. From the brilliant 2014 vintage, this is a blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon with lesser parts Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. It is a broad, creamy and supple wine, with alluring notes of ripe plum, fig, liquorice, cedar and tobacco.

The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon is fabulous. Deep, layered and rich in texture, it has aged impressively. A blast of dark cherry, plum, incense, leather and mocha all rush across the palate. It's a very young wine. There is perhaps a bit of edginess in the contours, but that is a pretty small quibble for a wine that was just in its third vintage in 2014. Red-toned fruit, dried herbs, mocha, lavender and bay leaf linger on the finish. Antonio Galloni1st January 2025

A Single, Exceptional Vineyard

Ulysses vineyard was acquired in 2008 by Christian Moueix. Situated along Napa Valley’s Oakville bench and extending over an alluvial fan at the foot of the Mayacamas Range, the site was once part of the famed Charles Hopper ranch and it is exceptional for winegrowing. The soil is composed of deep, gravelly, clay loam and is particularly well-suited to growing Cabernet Sauvignon.

The winemaking approach is minimalist, with attentive observation and restrained intervention. Ulysses is around 90% Cabernet Sauvignon with a touch of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot making up the blend and the vineyard was certified organic in 2021. While Ulysses is very much separate wine with its own identity, it is produced and matured at the Moueix family's Dominus winery in Yountville.
