86 Robert Parker
The 1988 Trotte Vieille is a very good, but tannic, backward style of wine that needs 5-6 years in the bottle to shed its toughness. There is plenty of ripe, extracted fruit, the color is dark ruby, and there is a feeling of weight and length, but the tannins dominate the wine. Anticipated maturity. 1996-2008. - Robert M. Parker, Jr.
84 Vinous
The 1988 TrotteVieille is frankly a little ordinary on the nose and lacks the precision and vigour of more recent vintages. It just seems tired. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly rustic tannin, a core of leathery black fruit stained with tobacco although it feels to be drying out a little towards the finish. Drink up. Tasted at the château. Neal Martin1st May 2018
