Château Trotte Vieille is one of the oldest and most respected estates in Saint-Émilion and has some of the oldest vines of Bordeaux. The 2016 release is, once again, an excellent wine though unusually has a slightly higher percentage of Cabernet Franc (53%) than Merlot (45%) with the balance of Cabernet Sauvignon. It is endowed with lovely layers of rich black fruits and exudes effortless freshness, though it will need a little longer for the new oak to integrate further. Drink from 2025 onwards.

The 2016 Trotte Vieille is blessed with a finely tuned bouquet of brambly red berry fruit, orange pith and light rose petal scents that unfurl with aeration. The medium-bodied palate delivers supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity. Fresh and pliant, with a gorgeous, silky finish that feels very persistent. This is an utterly charming and noble Saint-Émilion. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting. Neal Martin1st August 2020
